Scars come in all shapes and sizes and can be caused by various different means. External causes, including accidental injuries, burns and scalds and cuts made during surgery are some of the more common causes of scarring but virus and disease also often play their part.
One example of a scar-inducing virus is chickenpox. Chickenpox is a very common disease that causes spots and an itchy rash with a tendency to leave behind unsightly scars. The scars caused by the airborne virus often fade in time but their visibility can leave those affected embarrassed by the unsightly marks.
Although chickenpox is more common in childhood, adults can also be affected by the disease and it is possible to contract the virus more than once, contrary to popular belief.
The virus is spread easily through coughing or sneezing by affected individuals and is caused by an airborne virus called varicella-zoster.
Initial symptoms could be feelings of sickness, a high temperature, ulcers in the oral cavity and tonsil areas, aching muscles or loss of appetite. But the clearest indication of contraction would be the appearance of an itchy skin rash on the body and head.
There are several home remedies that can assist with the process of reducing the effect of scars, including baking soda, carrot and coriander soup and brown vinegar, but one of the most effective and industry-backed methods in chickenpox scar removal is silicone gel.
There are a range of silicone-based scar treatments on the market and one of them, Dermatix Silicone Gel, is a quick-drying and easy to use product ideal for body and facial scar removal.
The darker side to scarring
Though self-harm, on the surface, appears a more external cause of scarring, it is more the effects of the disease of depression and anxiety that drives the individual to do it.
Although it’s almost impossible to say how many young people are self-harming (undoubtedly due to the stigma and secrecy attached to the issue), it is estimated that 1-in-15 teens might be self- harming and that the most preferred method of harming is to cut
There are various methods of self-harming, including overeating, taking drugs and drinking too much alcohol, but it is often the cuts and bruises that are the most visible signs of deliberate self-harm.
Conducted at times of anger, fear, depression or low self-esteem in order to manage negative feelings, it takes just a single act of self-harm to potentially leave a life-long reminder. Though scars often fade significantly over time, effective self-harm scar removal methods are out there to help speed-up the treatment of scars.
Corticosteroid injections act as an anti-inflammatory and help reduce swelling and soreness whilst surgery and laser treatments can change the nature, colour and shape of scars. Silicone sheets or gels are used on healing skin to reduce redness and minimise swelling, with further information on silicone-based scar treatments have a look at Dermatix’s range of scar reduction products HERE.
