27 May The Dos and Don’ts of Scar Prevention
Scars are a natural part of the healing process after an injury to the skin. Your skin produces collagen to repair the wound as it’s the quickest and most efficient way to do it. This causes scars to be formed as the replacement skin doesn’t contain everything normal skin does so it looks a bit different.
So although scars are pretty normal, there are things you can do to minimise their appearance.
Here are the dos and don’ts of scars:
- Get immediate medical attention on deep cuts. Bad cuts might need stitches to re-join the skin, helping to prevent infection, and promote faster healing. Stitching may result in the scar being smaller than if it has not been stitched in the first instance.
- Massage. Medical evidence has shown that gently massaging cuts to promote blood flow speeds up the healing process and lessens the potential for scarring.
- Keep the area away from sunlight. Sunlight damages skin. New skin is particularly prone to the damage and will end up being discoloured making your scar more obvious
- Don’t pick at your scab. As the skin around your wound heals itself, it will scab. Picking at the scab will slow down its healing and leave you more likely to develop a scar. You’re best letting nature take its course
Your skin takes time to mend itself so be patient. Scars are an inevitable part of serious cuts from operations, accidents. Some of them continue to change for years after they were first formed.
Follow our dos and don’ts and, once your scar has healed, using Dermatix can help improve the appearance and reduce the effects of scarring on your skin even further.
